Police officers for the evening – Howard Heller, Megan Jones and Ron Weiss posing in front of the criminal Tony Perrotta. His crime: Being in NY

Our April meeting was a great hit!

ARA of NJ would like to thank our Host for the April meeting

Gamka Sales Co. of Edison  especially JR Weiss, and Bob Hibler who allowed us to transform a part of there well organized warehouse into not only a banquet facility but also a holding cell (see picture above).  The staff of Gamka provided individual tours of their well run 60,000 sq ft facility.  Bob Hibler also spoke on all the ways Gamka could help ARA of NJ members, by providing them specialty equipment to there clients and problem solving .  Gamka stocks over 30,000 inventory items, 1,400 pieces of rental equipment, expert mechanics, 9,000 parts and a large delivery fleet.   Gamka's motto is "Let's build it together"

Also, thanks to our sponsors, Miller¹s Party Rental and Main Attractions.

The theme followed the topic for the night. Fraud, Identity theft, credit card skimming, passing bad money and prevention tactics including the NER program.

Attendees were taken into Central Booking, where they received their prisoner number. While some members were escorted into the holding cell, a room piped and draped in white and black, others were hand cuffed and thrown into the jail cell until bail of $1.00 was made on their behalf.

Court was held in another room all draped in blue, where Judge Megan Jones presided and started off the meeting with a gourmet dinner.

Our spotlight Vendor, Viking, presented insight into the GPS system they currently rep.
Forest Williams of Vehicle Location System Technology, the GPS manufacture, presented testimony regarding his product and made a compelling plea as to why rental members should purchase his product.

Detective Jay Hunter of the Clinton Town Police and David Shillingford of National Equipment Register both presented tips on what to look for and how to prevent theft to a packed room of over 50 members of NJARA.

Detective Hunter after being booked and then released when bail was made, informed us of what to look for in counterfeit items like driver¹s licenses, postal money orders, credit cards, even cash. He then told of some of the investigations he has been involved in with credit card fraud and warned us to guard our cards like cash, especially when being used at gas stations.
Never let your card out of your sight!

David Shillingford informed us that as members of ARA we can register our equipment on the NER sight for free!!! Just go to the ARA sight and click on NER. It¹s as easy as that.
Really hope you got a lot out of your association last year and are revved up for some more fun this year. This newsletter will lay out the year as planned

Here's My Beef!

Theft of Services and through the use of credit cards.

A Customer calls and orders some equipment to rent and pays for it with
their credit card. You have them sign your contract agreeing to your terms
and a credit card authorization form agreeing to the banks terms. The
transaction is all completed via fax or e-mail. You have provided this
customer with a service that they requested in reserving equipment for their
use. This is no different than if the same customer called ticket-tron and
purchased tickets to a show. Right! In buying that ticket, they in essence
reserved /rented a seat in the theatre to see a show.

The week before the use of the reserved equipment, the customer cancels the
event and no longer needs your equipment. I have no doubt that most of you
in your contract have a cancellation policy. Customer, now that he/she no
longer requires this equipment and does not like your policy on
cancellation, goes to his credit card company and disputes the sale. The
card company agrees that the customer never received the equipment and
issues the credit. Next thing you know, you receive a notice from your
credit card company deducting the money without your knowledge or input.
The response you get from your credit card company or issuing bank is that
there is nothing they can do. But, if you write a letter to them and present
your case, they will forward it to the customers' bank to see if they can
negotiate with the customer and regain some money in good faith. As if the
customer will do that!!!! However, had that customer not gone to the
performance of the show where he/she had reserved the  seat, you bet, the
credit card company, nor the customer would of disputed that sale!

Now, follow this logic. The customer does not cancel, but either picks up
the equipment or has it delivered and the next day they realize that they do
not like the condition the equipment is in.
They call up, complain, or don't call and refuse to pay for all or a portion
of the items. And we go round and round again with the credit card company.
No different that had he/she gone to the show and didn't like what they saw
and wanted their money back. Right!

Theft of Services is a hot legislative topic with members of the  ARA. And
it has been so for some time now.
But, it is up to each and every one of us to make it our own personal issue.
Write to your representatives and let your voice be heard. As crazy Eddy
said, I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more!
It's up to you to fight for what is right and fair.

So that's my beef of the season. Let us know what yours is........
Megan Jones

Give your business the competitive edge. Become certified through ARA

ARA’s Certified Event Rental Professional (C.E.R.P.) certification is an in-depth program for individuals who seek an edge in the party and event industry, according to Carla Brozick, director of ARA’s Education and Training.

“This self-paced program features course content in eight disciplines,” she said. “Those in the program are required to finish three courses, pass the examinations for those courses, complete and pass the C.E.R.P. essay and accumulate a minimum of 25 qualifying points. The structure allows each participate to gain the knowledge needed to be an expert in the field.”

Those who gain certification “have a competitive edge,” Brozick said. “Certification shows your dedication to the field and your knowledge of the industry. Customers are looking for experts in the field to assist them with their party and event needs. Certification gives customers the assurance that they are working with an expert in the field.”

For more information on the C.E.R.P. program, call Brozick at 800/334-2177, ext. 241, or go to ARA’s Web site at www.ARArental.org. Click on Training and Education and select Party Certification.

NJ will host testing in early August, proctored by our own Steve Belliveau of Tentwares and Anchor Tenting. Location and date TBD based on the number of responses of individuals who want to test. Please contact Megan Jones 908-735-7368 or megan@celebrationpartyrental.com (best way) if you are interested in testing. The date is August 3rd for CERP testing. The location is to be determined. Those interested will be notified as to location and time. Don’t miss out – Contact Megan.

ARA of NJ Business Leaders Attend Capital Hill Caucus

Mathew Holt and Megan Jones (ARA-NJ President) of Celebration Party, Flemington<NJ, along with a team of American Rental Association Members conducted more than 130 key meetings with their elected representatives in the US Senate and House on high priority rental industry issues on Capital Hill in April.

The Legislative Caucus, an annual ARA event, brought 55 ARA members from 26 states together for an intense and successful session of advocacy April 12-14.

“It is so vital to have ARA members interface with their elected Representatives and Senators in Washington, D.C. They can personally share how important rental issues impact their business, their family, and their community.” Said Christine Wehrman, ARA Executive Vice President and CEO. “There in no substitute for these grassroots efforts to effectively communicate on behalf of our industry.

ARA members, comprised of rental business owners from throughout the United States, held more than130 meetings on the hill about these key industry issues Federal Taxes. Association Health Plans, H2B Visa Work Program, Surge Brakes, Litigation Reform, and Transportation Funding Reauthorization.

Megan Jones, Congressman Michael Ferguson, and Matt Holt

At the legislative caucus at the Capital

There is such a positive effect in enabling our members of the House and Senate to relate to a local constituent to an issue. We tell them our personal experiences and give real numbers as how they affect our business. Responses from our legislators were very positive. They greatly appreciate hearing the views of small business owners, and the time we have taken away from work to visit and present our concerns.”

While on the hill, the House passed HR-8 the bill to eliminate Estate Tax. This is a great success for ARA. ARA’s Vice President of Government Affairs, John McClelland, and the ARA Government Affairs Committee engineered the Caucus that included distinguished guests speakers Barry Jackson, deputy Assistant to President George W. Bush, Rep. Anne Northrup (R-3rd KY) and Greg Casey, president/CEO of the Business and Industrial Political Action Committee.

The ARA is a non-profit, international association founded in 1955, and comprises more the 7500 equipment rental businesses and 1100 manufacturers.

HOWARD HELLER IS

   “PERSON OF THE YEAR” !

Congratulations to Howard Heller on being nominated as ARA New Jersey’s Person of the Year for 2004.

The criteria are based on the service a person has given to the association within a year. The officers voted and selected Howard Heller based on the amount of time and true concern he has shown. We appreciate all the work he did in 2004 with setting up the Fork Lift Certification program, assisting in and being part of Party Tech, scouting our locations for meetings and greeting members at the door. He has brought new faces to the association and for that we are truly grateful to have him as a member of our association.

Senate Votes to Ease Limit on Immigrant Workers

The Senate voted overwhelmingly to allow seasonal workers to return to their jobs in New England’s tourism regions this year.

The visa measure, sponsored by Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., passed 96-6, and would exempt from the annual 66,000 cap on H2B visas any workers who were hired through the program in previous years. The exemption would be in effect this year and next year if the legislation is signed into law. Mikulski proposed the exemption as an amendment to an $80.6 billion emergency supplemental appropriations bill for military spending in Iraq and Afghanistan.

New England senators had pushed for a change after hearing from merchants who were struggling to find workers for their hotels, restaurants, cleaning companies and other businesses. And they said they were being forced to cut back on hours, push other employees to work overtime and even consider the illegal immigrant market to fill their openings.

New England businesses are particularly hurt because their season doesn’t start until late March or April, and they can’t apply for visas until 120 days before they hire. So by the time they applied, all of the H2B visas that became available Oct. 1, had been snapped up by winter resorts.

Megan Jones-Holt of Celebration Party Rentals in Flemington, NJ, said the cap on H2B visas has “hurt us dramatically because we’ve been scrambling (to find employees).” Jones-Holt contracts with four temp agencies to assist her with finding workers, but that is far from a perfect system. “With a temp agency you may have one person one day and not the next.” Jones-Holt recently spoke with New Jersey lawmakers during the ARA Legislative Caucus about the issue. She says she received a very positive response.

“This is exactly how things are supposed to work in a dynamic organization like ARA,” says John McClelland, ARA vice president for government affairs. “Megan brought this issue to our attention and asked us to help get the word out which we did. Then she and other rental operators followed through with letters and phone calls to their legislators.”

Lawmakers in both parties said the Senate action set the path for future immigration proposals, including President Bush’s proposal that would give illegal immigrants already in the country temporary legal status while hey hold jobs.

Of the ARA Foundation.

ARA Foundation Scholarships

The National ARA offers a scholarship to young people working in the rental industry. In order to win it there are many forms to fill out to insure eligibility and one of the requirements is that the applicant submits an essay. This year the applicant’s essay was to be on the following:

Describe a situation in the rental business in which you had to make a decision. How did you handle it? What was the outcome? How differently would you handle it if you had to do it again?

Names and identification have been omitted from the following essays so as to not interfere with the system as the scholarship winner will be announced at the February 2006 convention.

Applicant A

“As a former non-commissioned officer in the US Marines, I know that decision making is a way of life in all occupations. While working in the equipment rental industry, I have had to continue to make many decisions. A couple of years ago I made a decision that prevented a customer from having a substantial money loss.

On the night in question I was called out to the jobsite of a large concrete company that was pouring a tilt up building. When I arrived on the jobsite, I found that there were three light towers that were not operating. The first two were simple fuel problems, but the third machine had a bigger problem. The electric fan motor had stopped working. I knew that our parts department did not have the necessary replacement part nor did we have  replacement light tower. I also knew that at two-thirty in the morning there was not going to be any way I would be able to find the needed part.

I could tell the customer that there was nothing I could do, or I could find a way to make the impassible happen. The solution I came up with seems simple in hindsight; however, at the time it took several minutes to formulate. I took a box fan and taped it in front of the radiator. By doing this, I was able to temporary replace the non-operational fan motor. It was an ugly fix, but it worked perfectly. This was the solution the customer needed.

Looking back on my decision, I believe I learned a lot from the experience. It taught me that better preparation would have saved a lot of time and effort. The decision also taught me that sometimes a good initiative, as well as hard work, can be more impressive to a customer than a store that carries every single item a customer will ever need. Since my decision made the customer happy and prevented a possible loss to them as well as my company, I would make the same decision again. I sat down with the service manager and the parts manager to discuss a new system for identifying parts that consistently breakdown.
